4 Way From Boston To New York

When I explored almost every place in Boston, I chose New York for my first visiting city in the United States.

Why? Because New York is The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps, The Empire City, Gotham, etc.

So, let’s go to New York!

Even the tourists or travelers always choose New York for their first city to visit in the U.S.

When you are living in Boston, you only need to spend several hours then you will arrive the dreamer city of most travelers.

I provide 4 ways from Boston to New York, including train, bus, car, flight. Spring break is coming soon, plan your first New York trip and let's go.

Travel by Train

The quickest way from Boston to New York is taking the train. If you carry more than one luggage, then I suggest you take the train because it doesn’t charge the fee for extra luggage. Take the train from South Station of Boston to Penn Station of Manhattan. Both locations are near the downtown so you can book the housing near there. The Amtrak takes three-and-a-half hours, while other trains can take as long as five-and-a-half hours.

You can purchase tickets in advance by Amtrak or in person at South/ Penn Station.

The biggest advantage to traveling this way is that Amtrak is quick and direct, although Amtrak is pricey. The Acela can cost from $70 to $170, and the trains offer Wi-Fi & socket services.

Travel by Bus

If only have backpack or carry-on with you, I suggest you can take the bus. It’s an affordable option and more flexible. Trips can take four hours and up, depending on the traffic. I prefer to take the earliest bus because it arrives time around 10 AM that off-peak of traffic.

There are several options you can choose, Greyhound, Mega Bus, Go Buses, Peter Pan, etc.

Double check the depart and arrive location, most buses depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal, while other buses, like the Bolt Bus and Mega Bus, depart curbside. A ticket per person can cost from $10 to $40 each way.

The biggest advantage to bus travel is that it is cheap and has frequent departures. Most of the buses offer Wi-Fi & socket services. The biggest disadvantage is that traffic can sometimes be unpredictable, depending on the traffic.

Travel by Car

Drive to New York is also a good option when you are studying abroad. Most Americans at least try once the road trip with their friends or family. The most direct route takes you through Connecticut on I-84 to I-90 in Massachusetts and is about 220 miles. The drive passes through New Haven or Hartford, Connecticut, both of which can be troublesome during rush hour.

Not really recommend for the most visitors/ travelers/ students drive to New York. The New York has the most comprehensive public transportation so you can travel via the subway. There is two features of this Big Apple: expensive and limited space; therefore, driving to New York could cost a lot on parking car.

Plan on about five hours of travel time, though stops and traffic will add to the overall time.

The biggest advantage to travel via car is that it can be a good value if you are traveling with a group, and there is no schedule to adhere to. Besides car rental being pricey, traffic and parking in either city can be a hassle.

Travel by Plane

The flight always is the fastest way to travel. It takes about an hour, but that does not include time spent getting to the airport, checking bags, or clearing security. Sometimes the shuttle flights can be cheaper than the train.

I never tried taking the flight to New York when I am living in the Boston. Due to personal experiences, I took the flight from Chicago to New York, but when I arrived at the NY airport I spent always an hour to get out of the airport. After then, I spent almost two hours to communicate from airport to downtown. As you know, the urban city always has the terrible traffic.

Travel by plane can be an advantage because it is fast and can be less expensive than the train. The biggest disadvantages are dealing with airport hassles and factoring in the time, energy, and cost of getting to and from the airport.
