Author : Abhinav Bountra

Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States with a great history. Many historical events took place and so did "great and famous inventions".

Hi guys, so far I spoke about the things to do in Boston, museums to explore in Boston, towns near Boston, personal experiences, events happening in and around Boston and much more. One important thing is still left which I never mentioned or spoke about. Boston is the birthplace of many great innovators and a lot of significant and influential inventions took place in Boston. Some of the inventions which took place here are --

1) Disposable Razor Blade by Gillette

I am sure that most of us know and have heard about the famous company Gillette. It is a famous brand for men's and women's safety razors and other personal care products like shaving supplies  owned by multinational corporation Proctor and Gamble. Headquartered in Boston, this company was a vast history, this company was formed by King C. Gillette in 1901 as a safety razor manufacturer. In 1901, by inventing the disposable blade safety razor, Mr. King C. Gillette completely changed the way men shaved. His company made huge profits by selling the famous disposable razor blades making it a world famous brand from Boston. They also have a huge stadium to there name called the Gillette stadium located in Foxborough, Massachusetts which serves as home stadium for the NFL's New England Patriots Franchise and also for the MLS's New England Revolution soccer team.

2) Telephone

The telephone was invented by the the great Alexander Graham Bell. Even though there was a lot of debate and speculation about the invention of the device, but records, reports and our research says that the patent for the device was granted to the great Alexander Graham Bell while he was stationed in Boston. Thank you so much for the great invention Sir Alexander Graham Bell, we can connect to anyone, anywhere and anytime. I seriously cannot imagine how and what life would have been without a telephone.

3) Facebook

You must be a bit surprised after seeing the name Facebook on the list. You all must be thinking that Facebook has all its offices in and around the West Coast and headquarters at the Silicon Valley, but I must tell you all that the idea of Facebook was born and nurtured here in Boston. Its fundamentals and the various algorithms associated with it were designed and developed by the famous Mark Zuckerberg while he was studying in Boston's world famous Harvard University. Hence, Boston has a very deep and close connection with Facebook.

4) Electric Voting Machine

The first electronic voting machine was made by the great Thomas Edison in Boston. Even though his greatest known invention is the light bulb but the invention of voting machines was also a great one, and the fact it was invented in Boston, it makes it even more special for us. the machine was Edison's first patent and was initially used only by the Congress. In the beginning and first few days, the machines were a bit slow and did not get recognition, but with improvements and changes, the machine became a hit and till present the system and technology is used for most of the elections, even presidential elections.

5) Microwave Owen
Microwave plays an important role in our day to day life. From kids, to young adults to the elderly, everyone uses microwave in their daily routines. I would like to share with you all that the microwave owen was invented by Dr Percey Spencer. Spencer grew up around Boston, had acquired little formal schooling and later he got into engineering. One of the many surprising facts about him was that he got his first job at the age of 12 at a spool mill around Boston and by the time Spencer was 14, he was hired to install electricity at the nearby paper mill. He was an absolute genius. During his lifetime he got many patents on effective and efficient ways to mass produce radar magnetrons. Thanks to Dr Percey Spencer for making our lives so convenient.
