“Become Bostonian” established by four international students from different countries, including Taiwan, India, China, and Indonesia. Four founders have the awful first week when they arrived in Boston to become the Bostonians.
Katie, from Taiwan and specializing in MBA Marketing, an enthusiastic and outgoing woman. Before made the decision to apply for the master’s degree program, I worked in e-scooter retailer for two years. However, I felt frustrated when the first week in Boston. In the first day, I needed the large furniture and food, but I didn’t have a car or license yet. So, I tried to search information through the website, then Facebook group really does have me a lot.
Facebook Group For Chinese/ Taiwanese student:
Spend some time to browse these group, you may have a chance to get lots free stuff.
So lucky! I really got some free stuff form these trade group.
The other problem I met is the traffic. Even the Boston is the urban city that provides the well-established public transportation, such as MBTA and bus, I still cannot access to some places. My friend from Taiwan Student Association provided several ways to solve my problem.
Traffic Access:
MBTA - Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (Get the Charlie card first in Downtown Crossing)
Uber (Register as the member, then subscribe the discount information to get Uber pass)
Lyft (Register as the member, then subscribe the discount information to get Lyft pass)
Don’t think why I need two apps that provide the same service! Check the price first, if you think Uber’s price is too higher, then maybe Lyft has the lower price for the same route.
Living shopping and traffic were really the biggest problems in my Boston first week.
When you do not know how to solve the problem, just do online research that gone work.
After then, you will feel closer to become a Bostonian.
Indonesia
Ryan from Indonesia and taking MBA program in UMASS Boston, a quiet and reserved person. I have been in Boston before I came here to study. I visited well-known campus such as Harvard and MIT on the first trip. I went to my campus UMASS on the second trip during summer. When I arrived here from Jakarta, one of my friend from college picked me up at the airport. I took regular taxi from the airport and it costs me around $25 since I live in Quincy. I did not look for this house, my agent Global Immersions assign it to me, luckily all the meal for breakfast and dinner is included. The total fee per week is $300.
After I finished taking shower, we went to AT&T and grab some food. I don’t really remember what I did on the next day. The only thing I remember is we went to around Boston and try some good restaurants. Then visited Boston Common, Central Square, Harvard Square, and Downtown area.
If you are not taking a lot of stuff, actually you can save a couple of bucks by taking free silver line bus to the south station and go to your designated places.
Tip: You can get the Charlie Card from the Downtown Crossing.
Don't forget to download Google map or Waze to track your location. It is very useful to help you explore the Boston city. If you need to check the bus, I recommend you to use Smart Ride app in App store and Transit app in Play store or Google Map for both platform.
Great tips here! A rough first week is to be expected- that photo sums it up perfectly. Lol
