This year, 2018, Easter Celebration falls on the first day of month April, the day which a lot of people celebrate April’s fool day. Every year, the Jews also celebrate Passover before the Easter Day. What a coincidence isn’t it? In this life we might find a lot of coincidence, but what is the true meaning of Easter? Why do people celebrate it? And some interesting facts which I want to cover in this post.
As a Christian, I still remember the day when I was a kid, I used to draw or decorate eggs each year when the Easter Day comes as one of my way to celebrate it. I missed that kind of memory till now. But as I grow up, I learned the meaning of the Easter Day from my Sunday’s school teacher. The story started as a Hebrew called Jesus Christ who also known as the Son of God came into the world on the Christmas Day. Then he died on the cross to save every human being and rise up from the grave on the third day, which is known as the Easter day that we celebrate nowadays.
On the other hand, the meaning of Easter is different for the Israelites. The Jews celebrate Passover as a remembrance of the day when the Lord save them from the slavery in Egypt. It called Passover which means God has passed over the Jewish homes when killing the Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve.
I was overwhelmed with my experience during Christmas celebration in Boston. The Christmas celebration was not as big as it was back in my hometown, Jakarta. Back in Jakarta most of the church decorate the place with a lot of accessories and it is pack with people that mostly Christian that come together to church to celebrate it. While in Boston, I find it a little bit awkward that I can’t find any decoration and crowd of people that celebrate it in church. Most Bostonian will stay in their home and enjoy those time with their family.
With those kinds of experience, I was afraid that Bostonian will not celebrate the Easter Day either. And it was true when I went to the church last year; there were the same amount of people in the church just like any other Sunday services. Even though there are not so many people in the church, I can still feel the Easter atmosphere that can alleviate my lonesome of celebrating Easter in my hometown with my family. I usually go to local Boston church at:
Christ the King
99 Prospect St, Cambridge, MA 02139
● Maundy Thursday, March 29, 7:30pm (childcare up to age 3)
● Good Friday, March 30, 7:30pm (childcare up to age 3)
● Easter Sunrise, April 1, 6:30am
● Easter Morning, April 1, 10:00am (no Sunday School or Adult Education Classes; there will be Nursery and Children’s Worship)
Or
Reunion Christian Church
50 W Brookline St, Boston, MA 02215
● Gathering times: 9:30AM & 11AM
I believe there must be a lot of other Sunday services in churches in the Boston area. Go together with friends to celebrate the Easter Day doesn’t have to be at church because Easter is not about the celebration but it is about the hope that we have. Lastly, what is the meaning of Easter for you? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
