How to Choose Your Supermarket

YAFENG CHEN

Originally, I wanted to write a blog about good supermarket in Boston. After careful consideration, however, I think tell people how to choose a suitable supermarket is more important for a newcomers. Therefore, this blog would be the guide of choosing supermarket, includes price, what you want and distance.

The Distance

From my perspective, the distance of one supermarket is the most important standard to a newcomer, because mostly newcomer don't have car. You can choose a supermarket as your daily supplier. Maybe, product pricing is a little high in this supermarket, but trust me this supermarket will be a main daily supplier to a newcomer.

As me, I am living in Harbor Point on the Bay Apartments, so the Star Market is my main daily supplier. Even though I won't buy every thing from this market, I'd like to buy some small quantity products from Star Market.

The Price

Newcomer who is from other counties may pay more attention to the pricing of product of a supermarket. The reason is that Boston is a pretty expansive city. I suggest that you can go to the supermarket nearby, if you only want to buy some small quantity product, because you will save the cost of transportation. Then, if you could like to buy big quantity product, going to some market with lower pricing is best option. For example, Costco is a wholesale market that provides low price. I would like to rent a zipcar around four hours, and buy big quantity product, such as tissue for two months, a big box of laundry ball, meats for one month, and etc. About the rental fee, we can share it.

In addition, every supermarket has daily discount, but this discount has limit time, one day, or two day. And, those discounts are only available for some product, not all. You can walk in and check that, or you can read the paper advertisement.

What you Want

Mostly supermarkets are comprehensive supermarket, but they have a little bit different. I would like to list following.

1. Food Market (food is main product):
Whole Food, Star Market, Stop & Shop, Hannford, Trader Joe's

2. Daily Supplier (Big Variety):
    Wal-Mart, Target

3. Wholesale
    Costco

4. Foreign Goods
For the foreign goods, you can search in the google map. For instance, if you would like to buy Indian goods, you just type "Indian market" in searcher of google map. Because the author of this blog is a Chinese people, I know some Chinese Market, such as C-Mart, Jia-Ho supermarket, Kam Man Foods, etc.
